I am a proud supporter of our 2nd amendment right to bear arms. Our founding fathers saw this right as an essential check on a possibly tyrannical government, seeing it as a last line of defense to secure our right to life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. History has proven our founding fathers correct, as we have seen countries that have passed gun control devolve into tyrannical regimes. During the 20th century alone, 56 million people became casualties after their respective countries introduced gun control, including the Soviet Union, Germany, Turkey, Uganda, and Guatemala. Mexico, which has homicide rate of 22.7 murders per 100,000 people, has very strict gun control. As the old adage goes, gun control is not about guns, it is about control. Today we are able to protect our homes, our families, and our properties because of the 2nd amendment.
But to this day we continue to see new ways that infringe on our right to bear arms, including Obama's 23 executive orders. People who advocate for Gun control readily dismiss the dangerous effects that disarming law abiding citizens could have. But they also dismiss common sense. To them it does not matter that gun control is ineffective. Switzerland, a country that legally requires almost every adult male to possess a gun, has virtually no gun crime. The toughest gun laws are in Chicago where handguns may not be purchased. But the number of murders in Chicago in a 9 yr period total 4800; whereas, in Afghanistan, the American death toll is 2200 in 12 yrs. Criminals do not obey the gun laws.
But the biggest battle we face today is that of ignorance. Many Americans are uneducated on both guns and how they are beneficial towards our protection. They accept the belief that if we had stricter gun laws, horrific events like Newton and Aurora would not occur. Benjamin Franklin famously quoted, "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."
Whether it's magazine limits or so-called "assault" weapons bans, these attempts at stopping gun violence do nothing but ensure that good people, honest people, who abide by the law are deprived of their right to defend themselves. Measures to protect these fundamental rights are underway in states like Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, Michigan, Nebraska, Arizona, and Washington, where they are telling the federal government that unconstitutional laws will not be enforced on guns and ammunition produced and sold within their borders. And be assured that Idaho will be the next state on the list. Not only are states taking a stand, but private companies are as well. Several gun manufacturers, like York Arms, Olympic Arms, Extreme Firepower, Inc., Bravo Company, and Quality Arms, located in Rigby, Id, have refused to sell to government entities in any state, city, county who is restricting the right of citizens to bear arms. It reeks of hypocrisy when someone trusts a government with guns and does not afford the citizenry that same trust.
